If there is one cocktail that puts the true artistry of a bartender to the test, it is the Daiquiri. No colorful tiny umbrellas, no ten different juices to mask the alcohol. In its original form, a true Daiquiri consists of exactly three ingredients: rum, fresh lime juice, and sugar. It is honest, direct, and refreshing.
But we at Old Dragon love to reinvent these very purist classics. What happens when you break up the traditional, very sharp, and acidic structure of this drink and breathe a warm, exotic soul into it? We present the Old Dragon Daiquiri – an upgrade that rewrites the cocktail rules and provides a completely new Caribbean experience in a glass with natural notes of ripe banana and warming vanilla.
The story: A classic from Cuba
To break the rules, you must first know them. Legend has it that the Daiquiri was invented in the late 19th century in the small mining town of Daiquirí on Cuba. An American engineer named Jennings Cox had run out of gin to serve his guests after a hot day of work. Without further ado, he grabbed the local white rum, mixed it with the juice of fresh limes and some cane sugar – and thus created one of the most famous cocktails in the world.
The classic Daiquiri is traditionally mixed with unaged white rum. This makes it extremely fresh and “crisp,” but it also causes the acidity of the lime to be very prominent. For many connoisseurs, the drink is therefore often a touch too sharp or one-dimensional.
The revolution: Why the Old Dragon Twist changes everything
This is exactly where we come in. For our signature Daiquiri, we swap the light white rum for our Old Dragon Spiced Banana Rum. This changes the entire DNA of the cocktail.
Our rum brings a powerful foundation: It is based on first-class, hand-picked distillates from the two absolute strongholds of rum production – Jamaica and Venezuela. The Jamaican strength gives the drink the necessary depth so it doesn’t get lost in the lime juice, while the Venezuelan elegance cushions the sharp acidity.
The absolute highlight, however, are our natural refinements. The notes of fully ripe banana and soft vanilla harmonize so spectacularly with the fresh lime that an entirely new flavor profile is created. The drink loses its aggressive acidity and instead becomes incredibly round, fruity, and complex.
International trend: The world loves the spiced upgrade
If you mix this twist, you are in excellent company. The fact that classic drinks are being completely reinterpreted with high-quality spiced rum is currently one of the hottest trends in global mixology.
We are currently experiencing this firsthand with our Old Dragon Rum: In the highly competitive bar scene of Miami, top-tier bartenders are relying on these exact banana and vanilla notes to give the Daiquiri a modern, tropical spin. And in France, a market known for its strict culinary standards and deep rum expertise, the transparency of our Venezuelan and Jamaican roots is being celebrated in exactly these kinds of minimalist yet expressive cocktails.
The recipe: How to mix the Old Dragon Daiquiri
The secret to a perfect Daiquiri lies in the shaker. The drink must be ice-cold!
The ingredients:
- 6 cl Old Dragon Premium Spiced Banana Rum
- 3 cl freshly squeezed lime juice (Please never use pre-made juice from a plastic bottle!)
- 2 cl sugar syrup (Alternatively 2 bar spoons of fine white cane sugar)
- Plenty of ice cubes for the shaker
Preparation:
- Pre-chill: Place a coupette (a classic, shallow champagne or martini glass) in the refrigerator or fill it with some ice and water to pre-chill it.
- Into the shaker: Add the Old Dragon Rum, fresh lime juice, and sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker.
- Shake it: Fill the shaker to the top with solid ice. Now, shake extremely vigorously – for about 10 to 15 seconds. The ice should not only cool the drink but also release tiny ice crystals through the shaking, which perfectly balances the cocktail.
- The finish: Empty the ice water from your pre-chilled glass. Strain the cocktail through a bar strainer into the ice-cold glass. A classic Daiquiri is always served “straight up,” meaning without ice in the glass.
- Garnish: A fine piece of lime zest or – fitting for our twist – a dried banana slice on the rim of the glass.
Conclusion: Time for your new favorite recipe
If the classic Daiquiri has always been a bit too purist or too sour for you, the Old Dragon Twist will absolutely blow you away. The combination of honest, international rum craftsmanship and the perfect natural banana and vanilla notes makes this drink a velvety, exotic highlight for any evening.
Grab the shaker, get the absolute premium upgrade, and experience the classic in a whole new way!
