You’re standing in front of the shelf or browsing online and you see terms like “Dark Rum”, “Aged Rum”, and “Spiced Rum”. Everything is brown, everything has around 40% alcohol. But what is the difference? And more importantly: Which one will I actually like?
It’s time to get straight to the point. We are clearing up the misconceptions and explaining to you what is really inside your bottle.
The classic: What is Brown Rum (Aged Rum)?
Brown rum is basically white rum that has been given time. After distillation from sugar cane, the rum is initially clear. It gets its dark color and its complex aromas (often woody, smoky, tobacco-like) exclusively from storage in wooden barrels – often oak barrels that previously held whiskey or sherry.
- The rule: The flavor comes from the barrel.
- The experience: Rather dry, complex, often something for purists.
The rebel: What is Spiced Rum?
Spiced Rum literally means “seasoned rum”. Here, the base rum is refined (infused) with various ingredients. These can be spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or even fruit peels. In the past, spiced rums had a bad reputation: it was said that the spices were only used to make cheap, harsh alcohol drinkable.
- The rule: The flavor comes from the added spices (“botanicals”).
- The problem: Many cheap spiced rums today still use the simplest industrial alcohol and artificial flavorings. The result is often sticky-sweet and artificial.
The “Old Dragon” way: The best of both worlds
And this is exactly where Old Dragon makes the difference. We didn’t want to mask cheap swill. We wanted to create a premium drink.
Old Dragon is technically a Spiced Rum, but with the soul of a Brown Rum.
- The Base: We do not use cheap industrial alcohol. Our base is authentic, aged rum from Venezuela and Jamaica. It already brings barrel notes and maturity with it.
- The Refinement: We refine this high-quality blend with our natural notes of banana, caramel, and vanilla.
We don’t mask the rum flavor, we enhance it. That is the reason why you can also drink Old Dragon wonderfully neat (unlike many other spiced rums). It doesn’t scratch; it caresses.
Conclusion: What should I buy?
- If you are into dry, woody notes like those in a whiskey and don’t like sweetness: Reach for a pure, long-aged Aged Rum.
- If you are in the mood for a flavor explosion, enjoy smooth notes of banana and caramel, and are looking for something that works both neat and in a cocktail (like our [Old Dragon Sour Link]): Then the Old Dragon Premium Spiced Rum is your choice.
