Today, I have something very special at my bar: Old Dragon Rum. At first glance, I felt that I had some really good stuff in front of me – and my curiosity was piqued immediately.

First of all: It is a Spiced Rum. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first when I read “banana”. There are already quite a few banana spirits out there – including some good ones. But then I read into it and realized: Old Dragon is different. It contains real banana distillate, not artificial flavoring. The base is made of three-year-old rum from Venezuela and five-year-old rum from Jamaica. That sounded exciting – and built up great anticipation.

Behind the rum is Dimitri Zaharcenko, known as Dimi – a tattoo and piercing artist from Dinkelsbühl. His zodiac sign is the dragon, and that is exactly what defines the branding: strong, mystical, full of character. You can get the rum at his studio, from selected retailers in the region, and now also online, for example at Honest & Rare.

The production also deserves attention: Old Dragon combines pot still and column still processes. This means: intense aromas from the pot still, while simultaneously achieving fine elegance through the column still. A combination that promises depth and balance.

Let’s get to the essentials: Scent and taste.Right from the first nosing, the banana is noticeable – fresh, not overripe, rather greenish. Added to this is a slight pineapple note, cinnamon, some caramel, and even a hint of cookies. The alcohol is wonderfully integrated, nothing stings. Overall very tropical, pleasant, and exciting.

On the palate, Old Dragon then reveals itself to be powerful and harmonious at the same time:

• Clear banana, embedded in creamy, dark caramel.
• A certain sweetness – but without a liqueur character.
• Tropical fruits, exotic and fresh, which play perfectly with the banana notes.

The finish is round, fruity, and remains pleasantly present for a long time.

My conclusion:Old Dragon is a spiced rum for all those who like fruity, sweet notes but do not want sugar bombs. It brings power, balances exotic aromas with character – and remains distinctive in the process. For me, a successful spiced rum that clearly stands out from the crowd.
