When we take something on at Old Dragon, we do it right. We don’t do things by halves – not in our studio when the needle is buzzing, nor in the creation of our spirits. When we developed the vision for Old Dragon Spiced Banana Rum, one golden rule was set in stone: we didn’t want tasteless industrial alcohols buried under a mountain of sugar and artificial flavors. We wanted to create an honest, genuine premium product.
An outstanding rum always begins at its roots. It is a product of its terroir, its raw materials, and the masterful art of distillation of its home. To give our Spiced Rum the perfect foundation, we went on a search for the best distillates in the world. Our journey took us to two of the most legendary rum nations of all: Jamaica and Venezuela.
In this post, we take you on this fascinating journey and explain why exactly the meeting of these two worlds makes our rum an international highlight.
The Foundation: Why origin determines everything for rum
Rum is produced almost everywhere in the world today. But connoisseurs know: the true soul of rum is at home in the Caribbean and South America. The climate there, the quality of the soil for sugarcane cultivation, and the craft of the Master Blenders perfected over centuries are simply impossible to copy.
For our Old Dragon Rum, we rely on the so-called “blend” technique. This involves marrying outstanding individual distillates from different regions. The goal is to combine the individual strengths of the respective countries of origin so that a new, even more complex masterpiece is created. It was quickly clear to us: we need the untamed power of the Caribbean and the velvety softness of South America.
Station 1: Jamaica – The untamed power of the Caribbean
Jamaica is an absolute legend in the world of spirits. When you have a Jamaican rum in your glass, you can usually recognize it from the very first sniff.
Jamaican distilleries are world-famous for their traditional Pot Stills (copper stills), in which particularly heavy and aromatic types of rum are distilled. The Jamaican secret lies in the high so-called “ester content.” Esters are chemical compounds that are created during an often extremely long fermentation of the molasses.
What does Jamaica bring to our Old Dragon Rum? The Jamaican portion in our blend provides the strong backbone. It delivers deep, tropical, and slightly fruity notes. It is precisely this pure, unadulterated power that ensures our rum does not get lost in intense cocktails like a Cuba Libre or a Dark & Stormy, but instead proudly maintains its character.
Station 2: Venezuela – The Masters of Elegance
After the wild power of Jamaica, we needed a counterbalance to round out the distillate and give it an elegant soul. This is where Venezuela comes into play.
Venezuela is one of the most prestigious rum-producing countries in the world and even possesses its own extremely strict designation of origin (D.O.C. – Denominación de Origen Controlada). The master distillers in Venezuela frequently use the Column Still method and place enormous emphasis on perfected barrel aging. The constant, warm climate ensures that the rum penetrates deep into the wood of the oak barrels and develops an incomparable harmony there.
What does Venezuela bring to our Old Dragon Rum? The Venezuelan component is responsible for the softness and fine nuances. It smooths the edges of the Jamaican rum and introduces warm notes of toffee, gentle oak, and a natural mildness. It ensures that our Old Dragon Rum rolls incredibly “smooth” over the tongue and is an absolute delight even when enjoyed neat.
The refinement: Banana, vanilla, and the Old Dragon twist
Had we left it at this blend, we would have already had a fantastic classic rum. But we wanted to go further. We wanted the Old Dragon twist.
On the foundation of these high-quality distillates from Jamaica and Venezuela, we created our premium Spiced Rum. Instead of artificial laboratory additives, we refine our masterpiece with the honest, natural notes of fully ripe banana and warming vanilla. The Jamaican fruitiness and the Venezuelan vanilla softness of the base distillates capture these natural aromas perfectly. The result is not a sugary syrup, but a highly complex, perfectly balanced Spiced Rum.
International success: When quality overcomes borders
This uncompromising dedication to transparency and quality does not go unnoticed. When you deliver honest craftsmanship, word gets around – and far beyond our home in Dinkelsbühl.
We are incredibly proud that our Old Dragon Spiced Banana Rum now has a true international standing. In France, a country with one of the most demanding gourmet and spirits scenes in Europe, the transparency of our Venezuelan and Jamaican roots is highly valued by experts. And also on the other side of the Atlantic, in the exclusive, vibrant bars of Miami, absolute top bartenders use our rum to delight the demanding palates of their guests with our profound spiced aromas.
Conclusion: Taste the journey
When you open a bottle of our Old Dragon Rum, you are not simply uncorking a drink. You are embarking on an aromatic journey around the world. From the powerful pot stills in Jamaica to the elegant barrel storage in Venezuela, to the perfect finishing touch with natural notes of banana and vanilla.
Treat yourself to a sip, close your eyes, and travel with us. Cheers!
