From the Caribbean to Dinkelsbühl – the Journey of Old Dragon Rum

Rum is more than just a spirit. It’s a piece of culture, a symbol of enjoyment, history, and character. And sometimes, rum is even an artistic project – as in the case of Old Dragon Rum, which doesn’t originate from a large corporation, but from a tattoo studio in Franconian Dinkelsbühl.

But how does a high-quality Caribbean rum from Jamaica and Venezuela end up in a studio in southern Germany? And why is it worth looking at this special journey?

From Sugarcane Fields to Distillation

It all begins in the Caribbean – more specifically in Jamaica and Venezuela. Rum has been distilled there for centuries, and both countries have made an international name for themselves with flavorful, aged spirits.

  • Jamaican rum is known for its strong, aromatic notes – traditionally distilled using the pot still method.
  • Venezuelan rum, on the other hand, is often finer, more elegant and sweeter – usually distilled using the column still method.

These different styles form the basis for the special blend from which Old Dragon is created: Two cultures, two techniques, united in one product.

Aging in Tropical Climate

A central aspect of the rum’s quality is the aging time in oak barrels – in a tropical climate. High temperatures and humidity cause the rum to react more intensively with the wood. This develops a full-bodied, harmonious aroma with depth and smoothness.

The rums used in Old Dragon aged for several years in their countries of origin before being selected for the blend – with special attention to balance, sweetness, and fruity notes.

The Vision behind the Taste

But how does a tattoo artist come up with the idea of developing his own rum? It’s simple: Dimi, owner of the studio 2Brothers Ink, wanted to create a product that reflects his values – individuality, quality, style. And that’s exactly what rum is in its best form: artisanal, honest, enjoyable.

“Old Dragon is more than a drink to me – it’s an expression of character. Just as a tattoo goes under the skin, this rum is meant to leave an impression”, explains Dimi.

With great sensitivity, a blend with natural banana notes was developed, which delights both neat and in cocktails. The 0.5 L bottle with its striking dragon design is as much an expression of art as it is of taste.

From Studio to Shelf – Locally Rooted, Globally Inspired

Although its journey begins in the Caribbean, it deliberately doesn’t end on supermarket shelves, but in Dinkelsbühl – in the studio, in selected venues, in its own online shop. Production is not industrial, but with attention to detail and personal control.

Old Dragon Rum thus stands for a new generation of spirits: locally rooted, internationally inspired, artisanally conceived.

Conclusion: a Rum with Soul and Journey

The story of Old Dragon Rum is not a classic one. And that’s exactly what makes it so special. Where others simply import, a concept was developed here: From the sugarcane to the idea, from the barrel to the label – everything bears a signature.

Those looking for a rum that offers more than just alcohol content will find a true character here.
