For people with celiac disease or a pronounced gluten sensitivity, daily grocery shopping is often associated with caution. The question “Is this product gluten-free?” accompanies you with almost every food item. However, when it comes to spirits like rum, we can give the all-clear: Rum is naturally gluten-free.
Even if the answer seems simple at first glance, let’s take a quick look at why this is the case and what you should still watch out for with special “spiced” varieties.

The science: Why rum is gluten-free
Gluten is a sticky protein that naturally occurs in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and spelt. Rum, however, is – as you already know – produced from sugarcane products. Whether we are talking about classic molasses rum or Rhum Agricole made from fresh sugarcane juice: the starting base has absolutely nothing to do with grain-containing plants.
The decisive point, however, is the distillation process. Even if gluten-containing substances were theoretically present in the fermentation process, they would not carry over into the alcohol during the distillation process.
- The physical process: During distillation, only alcohol, water, and volatile aromatic compounds are vaporized and condensed again.
- The result: Gluten is a heavy protein and does not possess any volatile properties. It remains completely in the still during distillation. A distilled product is therefore, provided no gluten-containing ingredients are added after distillation, absolutely safe for people with gluten intolerance.
Attention: The exception for spiced rum & liqueurs
While a classic, aged rum (white, gold, or dark) is 100% safe due to the distillation process, there is a small theoretical gray area with spiced rums or rum liqueurs that you should be aware of.
Some manufacturers enhance their products after distillation with additional ingredients. In very rare cases, flavorings, colorings, or additives could be used here that were processed in a grain-containing environment (keyword: cross-contamination).
- The Old Dragon Quality Check: With artisanal production like our Old Dragon Rum, where we rely on the natural maceration of spices, vanilla, and fruits, the risk of gluten introduction is vanishingly small, as we do not use grain-based carriers.
- The Safety Advice: If you are unsure about a highly specific bottling (e.g., very cheap industrial products that feature a long list of ingredients), take a look at the back label or the manufacturer’s website. High-quality producers who value transparency openly communicate their ingredient list.
Conclusion: Enjoyment without regret
If you choose a rum – whether pure or as a spiced variant – you generally do not need to worry about gluten. Rum is among the safest spirits overall. You can therefore enjoy your Old Dragon completely carefree.
Focus your enjoyment on what really counts: the depth of the aromas, the quality of the distillate, and the moment you treat yourself to a glass.
